JOIN COHHIO TODAY!
Please take a moment and consider becoming a member of COHHIO. Your
membership dollars allow us to continue our critical work on behalf
of homeless and low-income people. In 2004, COHHIO made major strides
in improving the lives of our fellow Ohioans. None of these efforts
would have been possible without the support of people like you.
In 2004, we initiated a Get Out the Vote effort that helped thousands
of homeless and low-income individuals to embrace the democratic
process and go to the polls to cast their vote. Folks all around
the state, organized through COHHIO, came together to register people
to vote, to help them get to the polls on Election Day, to stand
out in the rain at the polling places making sure individuals were
not denied the right to vote. It was an exciting day to see individuals
who never thought they were part of the system stand in line to
exercise one of their most basic rights. But we won’t stop
there. We will continue to grow our Get Out the Vote effort, and
continue to encourage these folks to make their voices heard.
In spite of our collective accomplishments in 2004, the coming year
will likely present us with new and complicated challenges. With
your help, we will meet these challenges head on. These are harsh
financial times, and we will be fighting with all of our resources
to support the most vulnerable of our citizens.
- Ohio’s State Budget. There is no denying this will be a
tough budget year. The Administration’s budget is proposing
cuts to many important safety net programs and the legislature is
looking for money under every rock. With our hard-won success in
obtaining a dedicated source of revenue for the Housing Trust Fund
in the last budget cycle, we will be working hard to maintain support
and beef-up funding for this vital program. We will also be working
with other human service groups to present a strong coalition against
inappropriate cuts to our most basic services.
- TEL Amendment. We will oppose any efforts to pass a TEL Amendment
in Ohio. The so-called “Tax & Expenditure Limitation”
Amendment would fundamentally cripple our state economically. It
would clearly put us in a race to the bottom, as basic public services
would be damaged. Even our most basic community services like public
safety, libraries, parks, roadways, and human services would be
on the chopping block. COHHIO will work hard to defeat any proposal.
This is something that Ohio cannot afford to do.
- Federal Budget. The Administration is waging a new war on poverty
- proposing to inflict massive cuts to key housing and community
service programs. Programs like the Community Development Block
Grant (CDBG) and the Community Service Block Grant (CSBG) would
be eliminated, while Public Housing, housing for people with disabilities,
and housing for people with AIDS are cut dramatically. We must fight
these proposals and remind our federal leaders that housing is a
basic priority. That our citizens can not thrive without a roof
over their head.
This
is just a sampling of the work that COHHIO is committed to working
on in 2005. COHHIO will only be successful in these efforts with
the support of individuals and organizations like yours. Our successes
in the past few years proved that together we can make a difference.
With your continued support, we will continue to have hard-fought
successes.
