Rural Housing
Rural homelessness, the “hidden homelessness”…
Homelessness is normally seen as an urban issue due to the higher concentration of homeless in a smaller area. Yet there are thousands of homeless in America’s rural areas. It is estimated that 9% of the homeless people live in rural areas, which converts to 67,000 rural homeless people on any given day. These individuals and families are “hidden” and often unseen by their neighbors since they are living in abandoned buildings, campers, cars, or living doubled up with family and friends. COHHIO is providing a rural voice to these “hidden homeless” by dedicating a program that can provide capacity building, training and support to those service providers in the rural counties.
COHHIO staff are available to rural counties to provide technical assistance and capacity building around the following topics:
- Developing and sustaining a Continua of Care
- Developing, writing and implementing a Plan to Address Homelessness
- Permanent Supportive Housing
- Continuum of Care process
- Grantsmanship
- “Housing 101” – types of housing models, best practices for housing programs and services
- Inclusionary zoning
- Program and service development
- Other rural housing and homelessness issues
Technical assistance, training and capacity building is available upon request. Please contact the Rural Housing Program Coordinator at jondaclemings@cohhio.org for more information or to schedule time to meet.
